The Captain’s Cornish Christmas (Captivating Captains #2) Catherine Curzon, Elizabeth Harkstead

?Reviewed by The KimiChan Experience?

TITLE: The Captain’s Cornish Christmas

SERIES: Captivating Captains

AUTHOR: Catherine Curzon, Eleanor Harkstead

PUBLISHER: Pride Publishing

RELEASE DATE: December 11, 2018

BLURB: For a lonely Cornish lifeboatman and an author who’s more used to crime scenes than love scenes, this Christmas is going to be very merry indeed!

When Jago Treherne agrees to man the Polneath lifeboats one snowy Christmas, he knows he can forget turkey and all the trimmings.

Yet when he boards a seemingly empty yacht and stumbles upon sexy Sam Coryton enjoying an energetic afternoon below decks, Jago soon realizes that he might be unwrapping a very different sort of Christmas gift this year!

Publisher’s Note: This book is related to the Captivating Captains series.

REVIEW: This is a charming and well written novella in the Captivating Captains series. I absolutely adored these characters. Although the book has two MCs, the authors decided to do something a little different by having the story pretty much told from Jago’s perspective. Even though this was the case, the story still flows quite well.

Jago is on duty and has no huge plans for holidays other than spending time at home snuggled with his cat. Now, for those who are not aware, I am a total cat lady so of course, Peregrine the cat stole the show for me for a bit.

Jago happens upon a docked yacht that he thinks is in trouble but find, to his chagrin, that it belonged to famous author and childhood friend, Sam Coryton in a somewhat compromising, embarrassing and hilarious position. Figuratively and literally.

Sam has grown jaded of the London high society life and is looking to get back to his roots, peace and quiet. It becomes clear rather quickly, these two men belong together.

This novella is sexy, funny, and charming. Each story in this series is better and better and although different, still has a cohesive feel to them. These two authors did an amazing job of telling Jago and Sam’s story. What I particularly love about these novellas is that they’re so well written, the characters and dialogues so well fleshed out that they read like full length books.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and definitely recommend it and this series.

Ripe by Alan Semrow

?Reviewed by The KimiChan Experience?

TITLE: Ripe

SERIES:

AUTHOR: Alan Semrow

PUBLISHER: Self Publishing

RELEASE DATE: October 1, 2018

BLURB: Funny, sexy, evocative, and brutally honest, Ripe is Alan Semrow’s ode to relationships with men. In this epistolary book, Semrow writes to the men who have impacted his outlook, reminded him of basic life lessons, surprised him in more ways than one, and left him reeling for days. Writing to one-night-flings, men he has never met, and men he’ll never stop running into, Semrow touches on some of the most constant human themes—love, lust, desire, and the yearning for connection. All the while, the book details a man’s journey navigating and blooming by way of the modern gay scene. Readers will find familiarity and hard truths in Semrow’s statements about the intricacy and explosiveness of the intimate moments we share.

REVIEW: This book is unusual in the sense that it doesn’t have a plot, storyline, or characters. It’s more of a memoir; letters written to the men who has been a part of his life during the different stages. He’s reminiscing about the men of his past, present and who he wishes for in his future through a series of letters written from the heart.

With each letter, the author lays bare his soul. He writes about life and the things he’s experienced, happy, sad, good and bad. These letters are an exploration of friendship, love, and intimacy.

This book isn’t what I would call sexual or romantic. He does hint at sexual encounters/ relationships with the various men throughout his life but they’re not what one would consider explicit. It’s more like a reminisce; a reflection of each encounter.

Again, this isn’t a book in the sense where there are MCs, plots, storylines or tropes. What he has given us is insight into his heart and mind, his youthful dreams, longings, regrets and ultimately his growth..

And that is really quite amazing.

Starf*cked by B.L. Morticia

?Reviewed by The KimiChan Experience?

TITLE: Starf*cked

SERIES:

AUTHOR: B.L. Morticia

PUBLISHER: Triad Literary

RELEASE DATE:  September 4, 2018

BLURB: Some skeletons are better left in the closet.

Steven Sharpe is on the road to recovery. After boozing, drugging, and sex with just about anything that moved, he’s making a comeback. Age is only a number, right? Why should he hang up his mic and guitar at thirty-seven when hard rock music needs a shot in the arm? And with his powerful voice, Steven figures he’ll have no problem regaining the adulation he once embraced as the lead singer of StarHaze.

Despite all the crazy, fun times from back in the day, one night will forever be emblazoned in his mind—the moment he fucked up his chance at love.

Driven and determined, Noah James is quickly climbing the corporate ladder. At twenty-eight, he’s been promoted to junior partner and has finally gained his peer respect. Though Noah still gets crap for being a gay black man, he doesn’t allow that to deter him from fulfilling his goal of being the only James man graduate college and build a successful career. But the past has a way of sneaking up when he least expects it and biting him in the ass.

Ten years ago, Noah and Steven were strangers at a run-down bar with their only connection being a song. When they’re thrown together again by chance, neither of them is prepared for the roller coaster of emotions they can no longer deny. Now, the two men must face the truth that while love is a fierce emotion, so is fear.

REVIEW: I’be got to say that I’m not really a fan of the rockstar/pop star trope(s) but being familiar with this author’s work and my love of books with MCs of color and interracial romance, I knew that I was going to give this book a read.

Needless to say that I’m really very glad I did. Steven is a rock star whose star has dimmed due to his boozing, drugging, hard partying ways. Now that life is all behind him and he’s on the road to recovery and he wants back into the spotlight.

Noah is young, hardworking, intelligent and driven. His hard work and determination is finally paying off in terms of his career. His personal life is another story.

Of course, there’s this saying about the best laid plans…

This story is about second chances and a lesson about skeletons in closets and your past creeping up on you.

Noah and Steven couldn’t be more different from each other but the old adage of ‘opposites attract’ rings true with these two men.

These two men are perfect for each other but fear is working them both hard and keeping them apart. The emotions written into this story that it practically leaps off the pages at you. These characters are vivid and the storyline flows quite well. I am really glad that I had the opportunity to read this story. I definitely recommend this story.

TITLE: Because You Loved Me

SERIES: Again #1

AUTHOR: B.L. Morticia, Remmy Duchene

PUBLISHER: Self Publishing

RELEASE DATE: October 26, 2018

BLURB: Hitoshi Ren has a pretty good life—a great education, friends he considers family, a crush on one of the world’s biggest crooners, and a secret he believes has died. But when that secret walks back into his life in the form of late-night phone calls, he has to put his life aside and hop on a plane to face his past demons. To make matters worse—Rixton Corrigan seems quite determined on turning Hitoshi’s head.

Rixton Corrigan has been on a nonstop ride and he wishes to get off. Since he’s doing a video and a couple of shows in Japan, he decides it’s a good time to unwind and cut himself off from the western world. Time that’s best spent alone until he can get his head on straight.

However, those plans are tested when Hitoshi Ren shows up at his hotel, looking sexy and irresistible. His brother tells him to stay away, but how can he when he’s always been attracted to Dustin’s best friend?

REVIEW: Every book I read from these authors—regardless if they writing individually or together —keeps getting better and better. Their characters are beautifully diverse and rich with each personality shining through each page.

Rix and Hitoshi are as opposite as opposite can possibly be. Their personalities clashes were horribly hilarious. You know you have damn good story on your hands when you, the reader, want to Gibbs smack both MCs on the backs of their heads. You become immersed into the lives of and interested in the happiness of the characters.

These two authors took what could have been a run of the mill, basic enemies to lovers story and too it to the next level. There were outside forces determined to keep them apart but these men fought through them all for their HEA.

This book was filled with passion, heartache and humor. You go from laughing your ass of one minute to wanting to toss these men into the sea the next.

This book went way beyond a good read. It was a great experience. This book took me on a journey of emotions. It was one I thoroughly enjoyed traveling. This is the first book. I’m looking forward to the next trip.

REVIEW: I can’t even begin to tell y’all how much I enjoyed reading this book. Where do I start? Let’s start with the cover. This cover is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. The fact that two gorgeous black men grace the cover of this book is in itself amazing. The next amazing this about this book is that black love is front and center in this book. Not just black love, but BLACK MEN in love. This story and these characters were beautifully written. Maxim and Ethan…both of these men are battling demons: loneliness, heartache, pain, disappointment and loss.

These two men deserve happiness, and they find it with each other. This isn’t a book where the men fall into bed without getting to know each other. These guys take the time to build something permanent.

I really enjoy this author’s work. I absolutely love how she portrays her characters of color in general, black men in particular. She shows that black men are capable of love and tenderness. These characters experience the loneliness, heartbreak and pain but was able to find solace and love within and can heal each other. And it was a beautiful thing to read.

Take a bow, Remmy. You’ve done an excellent job with this.

Cover Reveal! Lovespell by Mia Kerick

Title: Love Spell
Author: Mia Kerick
Re-Release Date: August 27th 2018
Published by: Ninestar Press
Genre: Young Adult, LGBT

BLURB

Having come to terms with being gay, Chance César is still uneasy with his gender identity, or, as he phrases it, “being stuck in the gray area between girl and boy.” This concern, however, doesn’t stop him from strutting his fabulous stuff on the catwalk in black patent leather pumps and a snug-in-all-the-right (wrong)-places orange tuxedo as the winner of this year’s Miss (ter) Harvest Moon Festival at the local Beans and Greens Farm’s annual fall celebration, serenaded by the enthusiastic catcalls of his BFF, Emily Benson. Although he refuses to visually fade into the background of his rural New Hampshire town, Chance is socially invisible—except when being tormented or beat up by familiar bullies. But when Chance, the Harvest Moon Festival’s mockingly-elected Pumpkin Pageant Queen, meets Jasper Donahue (Jazz), the legitimate winner of the Pumpkin Carving King contest, sparks fly. Chance wants to be noticed and admired and romantically embraced by Jazz, in all of his neon orange-haired glory.

And so at a sleepover, Chance and Emily conduct intense research on their laptop computers, and come up with an article in an online women’s magazine called “Ten Scientifically Proven Ways to Make a Man Fall in Love with You.” Along with a bonus love spell thrown in for good measure, it becomes the basis of their strategy to capture Jazz’s heart.

Quirky, comical, definitely “sickening” (this is a good thing), and with an inner core of poignancy, Love Spell celebrates the diversity of a gender-fluid teen.

What reviewers are saying about LOVE SPELL ~

“Kerick devotes most of the book to sassy fun and first-love desire, but her depiction of the loneliness caused by apathetic parents, the insecurity of extra pounds, the stress of college applications, the meanness of bullies, the importance of forgiveness, and especially the uneasiness of being “stuck in the gray area between girl and boy” make this novel thoroughly enjoyable. The book not only hits upon all manner of teenage angst, but also on the significance of true family values and on the joys of such simple pleasures as high–thread-count sheets, sharing homemade pizza, and playing card games instead of “head games” on a Friday night. The characters are memorable and the dialogue is consistently bright and believable, featuring authentic-sounding teenspeak. The author even defines Chance’s invented vocabulary words (such as “Randatorbs” and “Dooza-palooza”) in a back-of-the-book glossary for readers who can’t keep up.

A comical, thought-provoking YA novel for those who believe in the magic of love without all the hocus-pocus.” – Kirkus Reviews (2015)

About the Author

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—a daughter in law school, another in dance school, a third studying at Mia’s alma mater, Boston College, and her lone son still in high school. She writes LGBTQ romance when not editing National Honor Society essays, offering opinions on college and law school applications, helping to create dance bios, and reviewing English papers. Her husband of twenty-four years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about this, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on emotional growth in turbulent relationships. As she has a great affinity for the tortured hero, there is, at minimum, one in each book. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with tales of said tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press and Harmony Ink Press for providing alternate places to stash her stories.

Her books have won a Best YA Lesbian Rainbow Award, a Reader Views’ Book by Book Publicity Literary Award, the Jack Eadon Award for Best Book in Contemporary Drama, an Indie Fab Award, and a Royal Dragonfly Award for Cultural Diversity, among other awards.

Mia is a Progressive, a little bit too obsessed by politics, and cheers for each and every victory in the name of human rights. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Blaze (Unbreakable Bonds) by Jocelynn Drake, Rinda Elliot

?Reviewed by The KimiChan Experience?

TITLE: Blaze

SERIES: Unbreakable Bonds

AUTHOR: Jocelynn Drake, Rinda Elliot

PUBLISHER: Self Published

RELEASE DATE:  June 22, 2018

BLURB: The rings have been selected. The champagne placed on ice. The cake decorated.

And the pre-wedding sex is off the charts…

Lucas Vallois and Andrei Hadeon are finally ready to walk down the aisle. There’s just one small problem.

A ghost from Lucas’s past shows up days before the wedding, desperate for help. Against his better judgement, Lucas and his best friend, Ashton Frost, plan a fast trip back to the one place they swore they’d never go: their hometown in Oklahoma. But the danger is worse than they expected.

Now, they’re in a race to track down a killer, keep a young girl safe, and get Lucas back in time to say, “I do.”

REVIEW: WOW! What else can I say? When I heard that book 5 was about Lucas and Andrei’s wedding I couldn’t wait to read it. I knew that meant all the guys would be together again and wherever they were, trouble would not be far behind. Well that was an understatement. Lol! I enjoyed this book so much I didn’t want it to end. It easily earned a 5star rating from me. Lucas and Andrei’s love for each other is just as fierce and hot as it was when they first met and we see that from the beginning of this book, (lol) all the way to the end. We get my control freak Lucas with the arrogance of a billionaire, Ashton Snow Frost and his wicked sense of humor, sweet Ian (who’s high on wedding fumes). I died laughing at that comment, and Rowe with his devil may care attitude “the embodiment of chaos”. I want a Rowe in my life!

We get to know more about Lucas and Snow’s past. The unbearable childhood they each had to endure that later forged their friendship and brotherhood. We meet some of Lucas’ family members like Nicole and Taylor along with his despicable parents. My heart broke for the anguish so much intolerance had caused. We also meet some new members of Ward security Seth and Cole. We were briefly introduced to a friend of Taylor’s, by the name of Bran with pink hair. I can’t wait to get his story as I’m sure there is one.

Finally, you will love this page turner. It will have you crying at times and laughing out loud at others. The action ad suspense will have you on the edge of your seat and the sex will make you blush.

Synopsis

Landon can’t believe he’s let himself

get roped into participating in a charity calendar, let alone one that features

tastefully photographed nudes. The genius physicist is hardly model material

and he’s dreading the nude part of the photoshoot. Amid his reluctance, the one

bright spot is his emails back and forth with the photographer.

However, Bailey ends up being not quite

what Landon expects, and their first meeting is decidedly awkward. Bailey’s

persistent though, and gradually Landon warms to the burly photographer, and

they discover they have a shared love of gamer culture.

A tentative friendship is born, but the

road from friends to lovers isn’t easy. Landon’s battling past trauma and must

decide how much of a risk he’s willing to take. A sexy connection may not be

enough to keep them together unless both are willing to put their hearts on the

line.

Approximately 40,000 words. Previously

released as part of the EXPOSED anthology, and loosely linked to the #Gaymers

universe, this friends-to-lovers, hurt/comfort story stands alone with a

guaranteed happy ending. Contains a brief mention of a prior assault, but no

on-screen violence or flashbacks.

Excerpt

LEVEL UP EXCERPT—This is their first

kiss, because I absolutely love writing first kiss scenes!

Bailey was the type who moved a lot as

he gamed, biceps flexing, knees wiggling, shoulders jostling. Landon always

liked people who got so into gaming, but it was more than a little distracting.

His body was quickly coming to associate that orange scent of Bailey’s with

good things, and other parts of him apparently liked Bailey’s nearness, which

was a novelty because instead of intimidated, as he would have expected, he was

more than a little turned on.

“Oh man, that was a rush.” Bailey

laughed as both of their health meters dipped to zero. “I’m almost wishing I’d

gone into game art, not photography. Amazing how these graphics have held up

over the years.”

“Totally. And speaking of art, let me

find the Space Villager stuff.” Landon reluctantly stepped away from the game.

He headed to the nearby kitchen, where he was pretty the papers were buried

with a stack of mail. Paper control was not his strong suit. “You’ll go nuts at

the latest screen shots and promo teasers.”

“Cool.” Rather than follow Landon,

Bailey went to sit on the couch.

“You want a drink while I’m in here?”

Landon called to him after he found the papers under a pile of pizza ads. “I’ve

got four flavors of Snapple, soda, and water.”

“Surprise me with a Snapple flavor.”

Bailey looked right at home on Landon’s couch, lounging back.

He really did not look at all like any

photographer Landon had ever met, and curiosity had him asking, “So why

photography? You said you could have done game design?”

“Yeah, I had plenty of friends at the

art institute go that direction. But I’ve been in love with photography ever

since I worked on our middle school yearbook. I figured out quickly that taking

pictures of events and sports was far more fun than trying to do the sports

myself, so I did yearbook all through high school, got a photography scholarship

to the art institute in Portland.”

“So you don’t play a sport?” Landon had

a hard time believing that. With Bailey’s height and breadth, he totally looked

like he lived for weekend games of some type.

“Nope. Hopelessly uncoordinated.” Bailey

shot him an endearing smile when Landon handed him the bottle of tea.

“Me too.” Landon clinked bottles with

him, then held up the papers. “Found the codes. But can I show you some stuff

on the TV screen while you have your drink?”

“Absolutely.” Bailey took a long swig of

tea, and Landon had to look away before he got mesmerized by Bailey’s full

mouth, how it looked when his tongue chased a stray drop of moisture, how pink

it was in contrast to his paler skin and brown beard.

Landon queued up the pre-release trailer

Josiah had sent him a link to. Bombastic music filled his small living room as

on the screen, and a spaceship pulled in for a landing on a planet filled with

ruins of a once-powerful civilization. The narrator had an iconic voice and

detailed all the special features of the expansion pack. Landon had already

watched this a half-dozen times, and it still gave him happy chills.

“Wow. I can’t wait.” Bailey looked

suitably awed. “This is even cooler than when War Elf added the mystic raids.”

“I know, right? Now look at the in-game

screen shots.” He brought up another video, body relaxing more and more despite

Bailey’s nearness. It was just so awesome to have someone new to share this

with. He’d been hyped about this all week, but Pike was distracted by his

boyfriend Zack’s deployment, Savannah didn’t game much, and the rest of his

regular crew seemed to have other things occupying their attention.

Somehow, as he shared more video clips,

he drifted closer to Bailey, so that their knees were almost rubbing. It wasn’t

a giant couch, so there wasn’t a ton of room to move back, but even so, Landon

wasn’t looking for an escape. He was aware of Bailey, very much so, but not

nearly as freaked out as he’d been a few hours ago. Instead, his senses seemed

to soak up Bailey’s scent and nearness, and it wasn’t until the fourth or fifth

video that he realized that he was aroused.

Clink. Somehow Landon’s left hand,

holding his drink, and Bailey’s right hand tangled.

“Oops.” He tried to extricate himself

without spilling both beverages. Bending to put his on the floor, he hadn’t

realized that Bailey had also leaned down until their heads collided.

“Ow,” they said simultaneously.

“Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry.” Bailey

reached out, feeling around on Landon’s head. “Did you see stars? Break the

skin?”

“I’m fine.” Landon didn’t pull away.

Bailey’s hand felt damn nice. Gentle. Soothing more than just the bump on his

head. Their eyes met, and he really needed to move back, break this spell, but

he didn’t, instead leaning into to the touch. Bailey’s eyes darkened, and he

stroked down Landon’s jaw. God, that felt so good, like an extra blanket on a

chilly night, warmth he hadn’t realized he was missing. How long had it been

since he’d been touched like this? Hugged, sure. He’d hugged Savannah

goodnight, and hugged and wrestled around with his best friend Pike at the last

LAN party, but neither of those things was touch like this. Caring. Sweet.

Arousing.

Bailey leaned in again, way slower this

time, all the time in the world for Landon to stop him. But he didn’t. Bailey’s

beard tickled an instant before their lips met, a soft slide of mouths. Not

aggressive at all, not the on-a-tight-schedule rush of a hookup, Bailey kissed

like they had a sleepy Sunday afternoon to kill, like each reaction of Landon’s

mattered, like he was trying to memorize something important and was going to

take his time learning the lesson.

Landon was the first one to take things

further, mouth opening on a sigh, welcoming Bailey’s agile tongue. He tasted

sweet, like tea, and minty like the gum he’d popped after the pizza, familiar

yet new at the same time. How had he managed to forget how awesome kissing

could be? A laugh bubbled up in his chest, but quickly transformed to a groan

of pleasure as Bailey nipped at his lower lip.

Not content to let Bailey be the one

exploring, Landon sent his own tongue on a quest, tracing Bailey’s full lower

lip, delving inside to rub tongues, retreating playfully to earn another nip.

Fuck. This was nice. The video switched over to something random, and he barely

registered it. He couldn’t say how long they kissed, just that he didn’t want

it to ever end.

Kimi’s thoughts:

Lots and lots of Dad jokes, puns, and a slaptick sitcom plot featuring zombies and wizards- that’s the recipe that makes up this book. Was it funny? yes, it was and like all good sitcom material, underneath the format was a very good story.being a romance, the story, of course, was a love story with a dash of mystery. Who or what caused the zombies to happen to begin with? Why are the zombies now acting different? If you like dry humour and zombies (there’s next to no gore in this, by the way), this is a great read to sit to down to chase the blahs away. This seems to be a stand alone, but it would be fun to see these two in a series, encountering magical mishaps, more scheming politicians, and saving the world, one disaster at a time.

Excerpt:

June, 1999

Dr. Josh Adams and his best friend of ten years, Dr. Greg Marshall, walked side-by-side down the long corridor. Their steps were synced as much as their heights and appearance. Both men were six-foot-three, and sported dark brown hair and full beards. Even their eyes were the same dark espresso brown.
The scent of fresh paint and new carpet radiated from every direction. The new Doctors’ building was nearly complete; only a few finishing details remained. The large brushed nickel halogen sconces lit up the hallway so brightly you could see every detail of the décor without straining. The carpet was an impressive medium shag, done in a plaid pattern of maroon and navy, while the walls were bordered in the same hues along the ceiling line, with a shade of ecru in-between. It was a clean look, tastefully balanced been efficiency and luxury.
Greg touched the new wall, his fingers exploring the texture of it. “Nice place! When will it be finished?”
“Supposedly next week sometime,” Josh answered. “Ah, here we are, number 437.” He produced a set of keys and jutted a bright silver one into the lock of the suite to their left. “Come on; let me show you where I’ll be working, and hopefully you too.”
Greg glared at him. “I told you I don’t want to leave the hospital. How many times must I tell you that?”
Josh shushed him. “You say that now, but you’ll change your mind once you see this place.”
They walked inside the expansive waiting room. There were no chairs as of yet, but a large, circular reception area lay before them. The same colors that decorated the hallway were reflected here, the largest suite on the floor. Josh pulled at Greg’s arm and tugged him along.
“Come back here, the exam rooms are great. I watched them put in some of this stuff myself.”
Greg groaned and followed his friend. How could he not? He’d been best friends with Josh for the past decade and they did everything together. Their lives were almost parallel: same age, both married, two kids each. Even the same concentration in medicine—both general practitioners.
He remembered back to when they weren’t the best of friends. They’d both been assigned to the same hospital out of residency. At that time, Greg found himself sickened by the mere sight of Josh anywhere near him. He found Josh to be overbearing and thought he had a huge ego. Greg vividly recalled how they’d argue constantly and schemed of ways to avoid each other at all costs. They’d fought over every diagnosis until their teaching physician made them draw up a truce between them.
That was over a decade ago. Since then, the two had become practically inseparable and spent many hours together, as did their families. Their wives were good friends as were their children. Josh looked at the new offices and practically drooled. “This place is top-of-the-line everything. Look at this–a lab, right in-house!” He walked into the mid-sized room and saw new microscopes, centrifuges, refrigerators, everything a thriving practice needed to get faster results. “I’m going to love this.” He brushed Greg’s arm. “I’d love it more if you were in on this with me.”
There was more than a hint of sadness to Josh’s voice. For months, he’d been badgering his friend to join him at his new practice. It’d be three doctors: himself, Greg hopefully, and Dr. Bill Snyder. Snyder was a specialist in hematology, hence, the need for such a well-stocked lab.
“How many times do I need to tell you…?”
“And how many times has your lovely wife chastised you for the hours you keep? Even your children are against your hours, isn’t that what you told me just last week?” Josh stated matter-of-factly.
Greg nodded and walked around to the lobby again. He looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows into the large parking lot, at the pond with the walking trail just beyond it. “This place…it’s too much like a park for me. It’s not me.”
Josh groaned. “What is you? All work, no play, and a pissed off family? Do you really want to keep doing that?” He took his friend’s arm sharply. “Listen, if you say no for real, I’ll drop it, but I’ll have to find a third pretty quickly. I want you with me. More important, I think Amber would want you with me.”
Greg looked into his friend’s mutually dark eyes and attempted to gauge his emotions. Ten years of knowing the man had taught him a lot, but especially how to hold onto a dear friend he had no desire to lose. “Josh…I want to, but something just keeps telling me I’d be more useful at the hospital. I love the building, these offices are gorgeous. It’d be ideal for me if that’s what I was after, but I can’t. I’m sorry.”
Josh stared at him for a long moment and even opened his mouth, but no sound or words escaped. He closed it and nodded. “Okay, if you’re sure. Swear on your life sure?”
A laugh escaped Greg’s lips. “Swear on my life sure. I love you for thinking of me like this, to join you in your practice, but I can’t…maybe in a few years I will.”
“Is that a promise?” Josh brushed his friend’s beard with a quick swipe of his thumb. “Look me in the eye and promise me.”
It was like looking into a mirror for both of them. Greg smiled and nodded. “I promise.”
Josh pulled him in for a short hug. “Sorry I pressured you. If you’re not ready, you’re not ready. Let’s go out for lunch.”
This seemed a bit quick for Josh to let go of the subject, but Greg didn’t question it anymore. “Absolutely, how about we get the families together and all hit that Mexican place?”
“Mmm, sounds good! Need to find a phone, call the wife.”
Greg glanced over at the receptionist area. There were several phones in strategic spots. He picked up the handset on one but heard nothing but silence. “Don’t these work yet?”
“No, not until tomorrow. Come on, there’s a phone in the lounge. Let’s go.”
“Wait, you sure you’re alright with me saying no to this?” Greg asked quickly.
Josh nodded. “If you’re not ready, I won’t push. I won’t have to. I think Amber’ll do that for me, or your darling kids will. How are they anyway?”
“Doing alright. They hate my hours, but I just won’t budge right now. I’ve worked it down to fifty hours a week and that’s pretty decent to me.”
“Aren’t you tempting fate by pushing her buttons? She’s got a temper.”
Greg laughed as they turned out the lights and locked the door. They started their trek to the hospital lobby next door. “Ah, refresh my memory? Kim could about rip you to shreds sometimes with her temper.”
“Very true. Our kids have seen some battles. Ben especially, since he’s the eldest. Damn! My kid’s a teenager! Where’d the time go?”
Greg pushed the button for the elevator. “Same place it always goes, right down the drain.”
The doors opened, and they stepped inside and pushed “L” for lobby. “Amen to that, my friend.”
